About
About Little Courtyard
Little Courtyard is a small set of free calculators for decorating a room: how much paint to buy, how many rolls of wallpaper, how many tiles and boxes, how much grout, and a floor plan sketch that adds up room areas. Every tool works in metric or imperial units and remembers which you use.
How it works
The calculators are plain web pages. Everything you type is worked out by the page's own code in your browser; nothing is sent to a server, and there is no account to make. The floor plan is saved in your browser's local storage so it is still there next time, and you can download it as SVG, PNG or a JSON backup, or clear it.
Where the numbers come from
The arithmetic is simple and shown on each page. Where a calculator needs a figure from the outside world, such as typical paint coverage, a standard wallpaper roll size, waste allowances for tile layouts or the grout formula, the page says where it comes from and links to the source: paint and grout makers' published figures and data sheets, a wallpaper maker's roll sizes, and tile retailers' ordering guides. Rules of thumb are labelled as such, and every default can be changed to the figure on your own tin, roll or bag.
The results are estimates for planning and shopping. Measure twice, follow the instructions on the product you buy, and ask the shop if you are unsure.
